Midlife crisis in men is not a weakness, but a transitional phase of life change. The story of Parsifal and his encounter with the Abominable Maiden reveals why, at the very moment of success, men can experience an inner void - and how this darkness can become a gateway to a new meaning in life.
A myth that speaks to today's man
In the story of Parsifal, at the moment of greatest glory and anticipated recognition, something quite unexpected appears: a repulsive figure known as the Abominable Virgin. She is a deformed, unpleasant female creature who arrives right in the middle of the celebration, at the moment when Parsifal should be crowned for his heroic deeds. Her arrival is not accidental - it is a dramatic change of mood that interrupts the celebration and turns attention from the external world to a profound inner truth.
Accusations and silence
This woman - though repulsive - has a task: to remind Parsifal of all his failures. Her biggest accusation concerns the time he witnessed the miracle of the Grail but failed to ask the healing question. It was a question that could have saved the Fisher King - a wounded king symbolizing the broken spirit of manhood. Parsifal failed because he remained silent. And so he is disgraced, humiliated, and instead of recognition, must go quietly.
"Parsifal is humbled and leaves in silence from the hall where only a moment ago everyone was praising him to the skies."
Dark Night of the Soul
The abominable virgin arrives with the same certainty as the sunset - just when a man reaches his peak. When he finally has everything he's been striving for: status, family, possessions, experience - that's when the doubts and quiet heaviness emerge. That is when the "dark night of the soul" comes.
"The ugly virgin is the bearer of doubt and despair - a destructive force that visits every intelligent man in middle age."
Crisis is not a disease
This phase of life - often referred to as the midlife crisis - is not a mistake or a disease. It is the archetypal moment when a man really stops for the first time. Everything that used to make sense to him suddenly loses its power. Work? No longer a challenge. Vacation? No longer a pleasure. Partnership? Maybe stagnant. Questions arise: "Why get up at all? Who am I doing all this for?"
"To banish its darkness is to sterilize your own chance to evolve."
The transition from hero to pilgrim
Johnson warns that in our society, this phase is seen as a problem to be cured - by medication, by escape, by a new project. But to try to get rid of the Abominable Virgin is to lose the most precious thing: initiation into the second half of life.
And this is where the path breaks. In the first half of life, man "fights" - builds, acts, competes, achieves. But at a certain point, the outside world ceases to be the main thing. The second half of life requires a different approach: to go inward, into one's own interior, into the world of the unconscious, the shadow, intuition, doubt. The ugly virgin is the harbinger of this new phase.
It's every man for himself
The crucial turning point in the story comes when the maiden gives each knight an individual task. Previously, the knights had travelled together - after her arrival, each must go alone. And that's the key: no collective solution works anymore. From now on, the journey is exclusively internal, individual and unique.
"After the encounter with the Abominable Maiden, all quests are unique. Each knight must go alone, find his own path."
Chastity and consciousness
A man must learn to be chaste towards his inner woman - the so-called anima. This means that he must not be seduced by inner illusions, fantasies or romantic notions that would lead him away from the deeper truth. All the knights except Parsifal and Galahad fail in their task precisely because they cannot resist this inner discipline.
This does not mean that a man must be perfect. The important thing is not to be flawless - but to remain true to consciousness. In other words, not to flinch, not to betray oneself. It's not about being strong - but being real.
"Perfection and result are not important - but consciousness is."
Darkness as a gift
And so, in the end, we understand that the Abominable Virgin is not the enemy. She is a dark guide who comes to shatter all that is false and open the way to true maturity. Her goal is not to destroy, but to transform. Those who accept her will find new meaning - not in the world of performance, but in the world of consciousness.
"Only when Parsifal recognizes its meaning will the path to the second Grail open to him."
So when it appears in your life one day, do not exorcise it. Don't run away. Sit her down at the table. Listen to her. She may just hold the key to what you've been searching for all your life.
